Best Ways to Avoid The Tricks Stores Use To Make You Spend

Trick # 1-  Multiple specials.

Three for $6!  Two for $5!  Many shoppers don’t realize that this also means each item is priced between two to three dollars each and you do not need to buy in multiple amounts just to reap the reduction.  So ask yourself, do I really need two bags of chips, or three tubes of toothpaste?

Trick #2-  Strategically Placed Merchandise

It is no coincidence that the most expensive items in any given store, are typically the most prominently placed.   While you may enter a store looking for deals, your eyes are typically draw to the items that have the clearest and most prominent displays.   Train yourself to go deeper into a store, and look below eye level when shopping grocery store shelves.   Also if you are drawn into a store for a specific sale item, ask a clerk as soon as you enter the store, where the item is located.  And keep in mind that is the primary thing you are looking for.  Try to avoid the allure of other bright and shiny things.

Trick #3-  Convenience Items on your way to check out

Waiting in the winding line on the way to the cash register is a newly found money grab for retailers.  From gum to chapstick, to bottled water-  the rise in sales of  impulse purchases in recent years has amounted to millions of dollars.  And while it may be able to justify ‘needing’ these items, they are ultimately lining the pockets of the retailer and bringing you very little added value.
