Each property and owner is different and may have set requirements.  Some owners may just require an email from you and will then schedule a simple phone interview.  Other owners may be wealthy and even well know celebrities who may put you through a thorough  background check before accepting you as a caretaker.    Either way access to listings for free and breathtaking vacation properties is well worth the $30 / year subscription cost.
