Freezing Do’s and Don’ts

The quality of your freezer obviously plays a big role in how your food is properly kept. But if you’re not in the market for a new freezer, here are some ways to store your food properly without it going to waste.

Set your freezers temperature at minus 10 degrees F, or lower, about 24 hours in advance of stocking up on food.

Don’t overload your freezer with food. As tempting as it is to try and cram all that food in there, this can also slow down the freezing rate and foods that freeze too slowly can lose some of their tastiness.

Don’t let air, moisture or other spoilers in. To create a tight seal, wrap food in foil or laminated freezer paper and tape it shut with freezer tape. If you use plastic bags, squeeze as much air out of the bag to add protection against freezer burn.

Thaw food right. Thaw food in the fridge at 40 degrees F or less, in cold running water or in the microwave if you’ll be cooking or serving it right away.
