How To Get Yourself Promoted

Never assume, that you’re on track for a raise or assume that in a year or so, “I’m about due for a promotion”. As a Smart Cookie, you need to take control of your destiny and make it happen! Here’s how you can start this week:

  1. This week book a meeting with your boss to map out exactly what goals and benchmarks you’ll have to meet and on what timeline to ensure to meet he criteria for a promotion.

  2. Based on your meeting, this weekend set up yearly, quarterly, and weekly goals to not only meet your targets, but blow them out of the water!

Example of a yearly goal: Today is April 27, 2011 and I have landed two new key accounts, bringing in $50,000 to the company. I just planned and executed a 4 star rated gala for our clients and prospective clients at our office, and have just been featured in my city’s business journal as a leader in my field.

Example of a quarterly goal: Today is August 27, 2010. I have landed one new key account and based on our client questionnaire,  I am exceeding their expectations. I’ve presented a proposal to my boss and key stakeholders on why it would be valuable to host a unique event a our office for prospective clients. I have sign off and will spearhead his event. I have researched all of the contests highlighting prominent business people and rising stars ( that’s me!) in my city and have a list of deadlines and submission requirements for each.

Example of a weekly goals:

  1. Have lunch with Sarah, a person currently in the position I hope to be promoted for.

  2. Attend seminar on how to effectively communicate with prospective clients through social media

  3. Find out what the typical salary is for someone in the promoted position I am planning to get.

3. Post your goals somewhere, where you look at them each and every day. On your bathroom mirror, or in a journal you look at every morning. And don’t forget to share your goals with your money group or with an accountability partner that you check in with every week.

You create your own destiny and if you feel you deserve more money at work then take action and show how badly you want it!
