Its Easy Being Green
Ditch Your Water Bottle Habit
As a busy, on the go type girl, you know that hydration is key! But it is estimated that our North American water bottle addiction generates enough plastic waste to wrap around the Earth three times. Instead of spending two to three dollars to quench your thirst, make it a habit to carry with you a BPA-Free Plastic Bottle. This could save you as much as $500 a year.
Unplug Your Charger
With nearly 80 percent of the population now believed to carry cell phones, millions of cell phones are being charged every second of every day. Shockingly, cell phone chargers draw 95 percent more power than it needs to. Where does the other 95 percent go? It gets wasted when chargers are left in the wall and not in use. So, get in to the habit of learning how long it takes to charge your phone (most only take 2-3 hours to charge from its lowest battery level). Then make a point of unplugging your phone and your charger. This means not leaving your phone convieniently plugged in overnight.
Buy Only LED Lights
Lighting accounts for about 12 percent of home energy consumption. Luckily many states and provinces now offer energy saving subsidies to help you save. But in terms of heat-trapping pollution, those inexpensive filament bulbs used in the average household actually produce more than a ton of carbon dioxide each year. Yuck. But by purchasing the increasingly cost efficient LED light bulb alternatives and replacing just one light bulb in your home, you are cutting out roughly 1,300 pounds of global warming pollution. These bulbs also last up to 15 times longer than typical bulbs which means you are making less trips to the hardware store and keeping more money in your pocket.
